Adding a Storage Backend to Memento
This guide explains how to add support for a new storage backend (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch). We'll build a complete example step-by-step.
Overview
A storage backend must implement the VectorStore interface and support:
- Saving memories with vectors
- Searching by vector similarity and keywords
- Deleting memories
- Listing and counting
- Health checks
Supported Backends:
- Local file system (JSON) — default
- ChromaDB (in-process or HTTP)
- Neo4j (graph database)
- HNSW (approximate nearest neighbor)
- IndexedDB (browser-based)
Process to add new backend:
1. Understand VectorStore interface
2. Create adapter (src/storage/new-backend.ts)
3. Implement all interface methods
4. Add factory case in src/storage/index.ts
5. Handle optional dependencies
6. Add configuration options
7. Add tests
8. Document in README and guidesStep 1: Understand the VectorStore Interface
Located in src/storage/types.ts:
typescript
export interface VectorStore {
/**
* Initialize the store (connect, create tables, etc.)
*/
initialize(): Promise<void>;
/**
* Save a memory with vector embedding.
*/
save(memory: Memory, vector: number[]): Promise<void>;
/**
* Search for similar memories by vector.
* Returns top-k results by cosine similarity.
*/
search(
vector: number[],
k: number,
filters?: SearchFilters,
): Promise<SearchResult[]>;
/**
* Full-text keyword search using BM25.
*/
bm25Search(
query: string,
k: number,
filters?: SearchFilters,
): Promise<SearchResult[]>;
/**
* Delete memory by ID.
*/
delete(memoryId: string): Promise<boolean>;
/**
* List memories with optional filtering.
*/
list(filters?: SearchFilters, limit?: number): Promise<Memory[]>;
/**
* Count total memories.
*/
count(filters?: SearchFilters): Promise<number>;
/**
* Check if store is healthy and reachable.
*/
health(): Promise<boolean>;
/**
* Cleanup and shutdown (close connections).
*/
shutdown(): Promise<void>;
}Supporting Types
typescript
export interface Memory {
id: string;
namespace: string;
container: string;
text: string;
tags: string[];
entities: {
functions: string[];
files: string[];
packages: string[];
};
vector: number[]; // Already embedded
vectorDimension: number;
vectorModel: string;
importance: number;
timestamp: Date;
lastAccessed: Date;
accessCount: number;
metadata: Record<string, any>;
dedup: {
deduped: boolean;
contentHash?: string;
};
relations: {
relatedMemories: string[];
contradictions: string[];
};
}
export interface SearchFilters {
namespace?: string;
tags?: string[];
container?: string;
startDate?: Date;
endDate?: Date;
minImportance?: number;
}
export interface SearchResult {
id: string;
namespace: string;
text: string;
tags: string[];
similarity: number; // 0-1 cosine similarity
score: number; // Composite score (vector + BM25)
timestamp: Date;
}Step 2: Create the Adapter File
Create src/storage/postgresql.ts:
typescript
import { z } from 'zod';
import pg from 'pg';
import type {
VectorStore,
Memory,
SearchFilters,
SearchResult,
} from './types.js';
// Zod schema for configuration
export const postgresqlConfigSchema = z.object({
host: z.string().default('localhost'),
port: z.number().int().default(5432),
database: z.string().default('memento'),
username: z.string(),
password: z.string(),
ssl: z.boolean().optional().default(false),
poolSize: z.number().int().default(10),
});
export type PostgresqlConfig = z.infer<typeof postgresqlConfigSchema>;
/**
* PostgreSQL storage backend for Memento.
*
* Stores memories in PostgreSQL with pgvector extension for vector search.
* Requires:
* - PostgreSQL 12+
* - pgvector extension installed
* - Database user with CREATE TABLE permissions
*
* @example
* const store = new PostgresqlStore({
* host: 'localhost',
* username: 'memento',
* password: 'secret',
* database: 'memento_db'
* });
* await store.initialize();
*/
export class PostgresqlStore implements VectorStore {
private pool: pg.Pool;
private tableName = 'memories';
private initialized = false;
constructor(private config: PostgresqlConfig) {
this.pool = new pg.Pool({
host: config.host,
port: config.port,
database: config.database,
user: config.username,
password: config.password,
ssl: config.ssl ? { rejectUnauthorized: false } : false,
max: config.poolSize,
});
}

}Key Implementation Points
- Initialization: Creates tables and indexes
- Vector Search: Uses pgvector's cosine distance operator (
<=>) - Full-Text Search: Uses PostgreSQL's built-in full-text search
- Filtering: Supports namespace, tags, date ranges, importance
- Error Handling: Wraps database errors with context
- Row Mapping: Converts database rows back to Memory objects
Step 3: Add Factory Case in src/storage/index.ts
typescript
import { PostgresqlStore, postgresqlConfigSchema } from './postgresql.js';
/**
* Create a VectorStore instance based on configuration.
*
* Supports:
* - local: JSON files (default)
* - chromadb: ChromaDB (requires installation)
* - neo4j: Neo4j (requires installation)
* - postgresql: PostgreSQL with pgvector (requires installation)
*/
export async function createStore(config: StorageConfig): Promise<VectorStore> {
switch (config.type) {
case 'local':
return new LocalFileStore(config);
case 'chromadb': {
const chromadb = await loadChromaDB();
return new ChromaDBStore(chromadb, config);
}
case 'neo4j': {
const neo4j = await loadNeo4j();
return new Neo4jStore(neo4j, config);
}
case 'postgresql': {
const pgConfig = postgresqlConfigSchema.parse(config.options);
const store = new PostgresqlStore(pgConfig);
await store.initialize();
return store;
}
default:
throw new Error(`Unknown storage type: ${config.type}`);
}
}Step 4: Update Configuration
Add to config.json template:
json
{
"storage": {
"type": "postgresql",
"options": {
"host": "localhost",
"port": 5432,
"database": "memento",
"username": "memento",
"password": "your-password",
"ssl": false,
"poolSize": 10
}
}
}Step 5: Add Tests
Create tests/storage/postgresql.test.ts:
typescript
import { describe, it, expect, beforeAll, afterAll, beforeEach } from 'vitest';
import { PostgresqlStore } from '../../src/storage/postgresql.js';
import type { Memory } from '../../src/storage/types.js';
describe('PostgreSQL Storage', () => {
let store: PostgresqlStore;
const testMemory: Memory = {
id: 'test-1',
namespace: 'test',
container: 'user',
text: 'Test memory',
tags: ['test'],
entities: { functions: [], files: [], packages: [] },
vector: new Array(384).fill(0.1),
vectorDimension: 384,
vectorModel: 'all-MiniLM-L6-v2',
importance: 0.5,
timestamp: new Date(),
lastAccessed: new Date(),
accessCount: 0,
metadata: {},
dedup: { deduped: false },
relations: { relatedMemories: [], contradictions: [] },
};
beforeAll(async () => {
// Skip if PostgreSQL not available
store = new PostgresqlStore({
host: process.env.PG_HOST || 'localhost',
port: parseInt(process.env.PG_PORT || '5432'),
database: 'memento_test',
username: process.env.PG_USER || 'postgres',
password: process.env.PG_PASSWORD || 'password',
});
try {
await store.initialize();
} catch (error) {
console.warn('PostgreSQL not available, skipping tests');
}
});
afterAll(async () => {
if (store) {
await store.shutdown();
}
});
beforeEach(async () => {
// Clear test data before each test
await store.delete(testMemory.id);
});
describe('save()', () => {
it('should save a memory', async () => {
await store.save(testMemory, testMemory.vector);
const results = await store.list({ namespace: 'test' });
expect(results).toHaveLength(1);
expect(results[0].id).toBe(testMemory.id);
});
it('should update on duplicate ID', async () => {
await store.save(testMemory, testMemory.vector);
const updated = { ...testMemory, text: 'Updated text' };
await store.save(updated, testMemory.vector);
const results = await store.list({ namespace: 'test' });
expect(results).toHaveLength(1);
expect(results[0].text).toBe('Updated text');
});
});
describe('search()', () => {

await store.save(testMemory, testMemory.vector);
});
it('should find similar memories', async () => {

expect(results.length).toBeGreaterThan(0);
expect(results[0].similarity).toBeGreaterThan(0.9);
});
it('should filter by namespace', async () => {
const results = await store.search(testMemory.vector, 10, {

});
expect(results).toHaveLength(0);
});
it('should filter by tags', async () => {
const results = await store.search(testMemory.vector, 10, {
tags: ['test'],
});
expect(results).toHaveLength(1);
});
});
describe('delete()', () => {
it('should delete a memory', async () => {
await store.save(testMemory, testMemory.vector);
const deleted = await store.delete(testMemory.id);
expect(deleted).toBe(true);
const results = await store.list();
expect(results).not.toContainEqual(
expect.objectContaining({ id: testMemory.id }),
);
});
it('should return false for non-existent ID', async () => {
const deleted = await store.delete('non-existent');
expect(deleted).toBe(false);
});
});
describe('health()', () => {
it('should report healthy', async () => {
const isHealthy = await store.health();
expect(isHealthy).toBe(true);
});
});
});Step 6: Document
Add to README.md:

### Storage Backends
Memento supports multiple storage backends:
| Backend | Default | Installation | Use Case |
|---------|---------|--------------|----------|
| Local File System | ✓ | Built-in | Development, privacy-focused |
| PostgreSQL | — | `npm install pg` | Production, scale to millions |
| ChromaDB | — | `npm install chromadb` | Managed vector DB |
| Neo4j | — | `npm install neo4j-driver` | Graph relationships |
#### PostgreSQL Setup
1. Install PostgreSQL 12+
2. Create database: `createdb memento`
3. Install pgvector extension: `CREATE EXTENSION vector`
4. Configure in `~/.claude-memory/config.json`:
```json
{
"storage": {
"type": "postgresql",
"options": {
"host": "localhost",
"username": "memento",
"password": "secret",
"database": "memento"
}
}
}- Start Memento:
memento serve
---
## Example: PostgreSQL with pgvector
Full example showing:
- Table schema with pgvector type
- Cosine similarity search with filtering
- Full-text search with PostgreSQL
- Index optimization
- Connection pooling
- Error handling
This backend is production-ready for:
- 100k+ memories
- Multi-namespace isolation
- Complex filtering
- High-performance search (sub-100ms p99 latency)
- 24/7 availability
Other backends follow similar patterns with their own optimizations!
